Grins & giggles Preschool

Grins & Giggles Playschool is a preschool based on sound principles of child development and practices quality programming that is age and individually appropriate. Our goal is to give children a sense of self-worth by helping them develop at their own pace while learning basic skills. We strive to help children feel confident and secure enough to explore and grow in a stimulating educational and social environment. At SLGGP, children learn to participate in a variety of rich, individual and group activities designed to develop language and reading readiness skills enhancing physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual skills that will increase their ability to succeed in school.

At St. Luke Lutheran Church we are able to offer toilet trained three, four and five year-olds an affordable preschool experience. Classes remain small to assure the individual attention each child deserves to help them grow.  Each week follows a different theme and class is supplemented with community speakers and field trips to enhance the child’s learning. Families have the option of choosing a two (Tuesday and Thursday), three (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), or five (Monday through Friday) day program.  The school day runs from 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon, September through June.

The cost of the program depends on how many days the student attends SLGGP.  For all students, there is a $25 non-refundable registration fee.  For students attending two days a week, the tuition is $175.  For three days, it is $250.  And for five days, it is $425.

Led by Nancy Rupert, our experienced teachers bring the joy of teaching to the classroom every day. Our entire program and all of our interactions with each child is based upon principles of Christian love.

Nancy Rupert

Nancy K. Rupert was born and raised in South Windsor, Connecticut but spent summers growing up on Lord’s Point, Stonington, Connecticut. Her love of the ocean found her seeking employment in this beautiful area.

Nancy has been a member of St. Luke Lutheran church since 1973 when she graduated from Keene State College in New Hampshire and started her teaching career as a Family & Consumer Science Teacher (then called Home Economics) at Waterford High School. For 35 years Nancy taught Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Independent Living, Culinary Arts and Interior Decorating. She received her Master Degree in Early Childhood Education from Connecticut College in 1985. As part of the Early Childhood Education program at Waterford High School Nancy organized and operated a preschool (operated on campus). Her high school students received the same curriculum as students attending the Three Rivers Community College Early Childhood Education program. The high school’s offering of morning and afternoon preschool sessions (to the public) became very sought after by expectant families in the area.  Also, many of her students who participated in the curriculum and were active in the preschool went on to later become elementary or preschool teachers later in life.

Nancy also was a professional photographer operating her studio, ‘Rupert’s Photography’ from 1978-2006. She shot hundreds of weddings as well as family photos and anniversary party photographs.

After retiring from Waterford High School, Nancy opened ‘Grins & Giggles Playschool’ at the Tower Street Community Center in Westerly, Rhode Island where she operated that program for four years.

When Nancy served on the Transition Team gathering information to write the profile for the new perspective minister, many members of the congregation expressed their wish to have more young families join our church. She saw this desire as an opportunity to offer her preschool to the St. Luke community. After a year of going through the licensing paperwork, St. Luke Grins & Giggles Preschool opened its doors in September 2014. The school opened in its third year with a waiting list! Nancy sees the program expanding their offerings from a three day school to a five day school with possible opportunities to grow further in the future. She is very excited to have been a part of this mission within St. Luke Lutheran Church!
