Reaching out to our local community

  • St. Luke Community Garden

St. Luke maintains a community vegetable garden that is lovingly cared for by members of the congregation. This project provides hundreds of pounds of vegetables to the New London Meal Center.

  • Friends of Maria

Friends of Maria is an independent non-profit charity, founded by a member of St. Luke, that offers volunteer opportunities for women who believe in the power of friendship to motivate, empower, and transform. Many of the volunteers who help the organization help staff their thrift store "Maria's Treasures" are from St. Luke.

  • New London Meal Center

Each month on the first Sunday, St. Luke volunteers cook and serve a nutritious meal at the New London Community Meal Center. We serve an average of 70-80 meals each month. Any leftovers are used for lunch on the following Monday. We also provide cooks for meals on the fifth Sundays of the month, when they occur.

  • Furniture Bank of Southeastern Connecticut

The Furniture Bank started as a St. Luke ministry providing used furniture to families in need. The furniture was largely provided by members and friends of St. Luke. As the Furniture Bank grew, it became an independent charity so that it could qualify for various grants from charitable trusts and foundations in the area. However, the Furniture Bank is still supported by volunteers from St. Luke. Twice a year St. Luke sponsors a Tag Sale solely for the benefit of the Furniture Bank. This tag dale has become a local destination even and is usually very well attended.

  • God's Work, Our Hands

God's Work, Our Hands is an annual event of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) that encourages congregations to go out into their communities to perform charitable work for those in need. St. Luke uses this event to conduct an Outreach, Inc ( meal packaging event to help feed the hungry in New London County. We raise the funds for the materials which are provided through Outreach, Inc and get volunteers to package simple six serving meals for donation to local food pantries and food banks. Our meal assembly events generally consist of packing approximately 45,000 servings which were distributed to the Ledyard Food Locker, The Preston Food Pantry, and the United Way Gemma Moran Food Center in New London that serves all of the local food pantries in New London County.

  • Crop Walk

St. Luke is proud to participate in the annual Gales Ferry/Ledyard Crop Hunger Walk, held in October. The walk raises money and awareness to help combat hunger in the community and around the world. Volunteers are needs each year to organize participation, gather pledges, and represent St. Luke as walkers in this community event.

  • Red Cross Blood Drives

Hosting blood drives for the Red Cross is an important ministry of our church. We provide volunteers to assist with the drive and provide snacks. We are usually able to collect 25- 35 units of blood each drive. Volunteers and donors are always welcome.
